Requirements for TVDE Drivers
Must hold a Category B driving license for at least 3 years, with a Group II endorsement
Initial training spans 50 hours (theory + practical), covering six mandatory modules per Portaria No. 293/2018 voluptatibus commodi numquam, error, est. Ea, consequatur.
Continuous training (renewal) requires an 8-hour refresher course
Required for “motorist TVDE – IMT,” including mention of “frequent contact with minors.”
Obtainable via IMT’s online services; € 30 fee. A taxi driver with a valid CMT can skip the final evaluation.
CMTVDE is valid for 5 years, renewable for equal periods upon proof of continued suitability and attendance of the 8-hour refresher training. Lapsed certificates require completing the full 50-hour course again.
TVDE Vehicle Requirements & Documentation
Must be under 7 years old, with a maximum of 9 seats (including driver), and have 5 doors.
Must include TVDE-specific professional liability insurance.
Minimum civil liability coverage of €50,000, occupant protection of €10,000.
- Occupational accident insurance is now mandatory under Law No. 13/2023
Must pass IPO (Periodic Technical Inspection) with TVDE compliance
Registration with a licensed TVDE operator is required.
Sticker dimensions: 145 mm × 68 mm, white background, black border (5 mm), “TVDE” in 38 mm tall black characters, plus license number.
Placement: right side of front windshield, left side of rear windshield, easily removable and fully visible.

TVDE stands for Transporte em Veículo Descaracterizado a partir de Plataforma Electrónica. In simple terms, it’s Portugal’s official license for ride-hailing services (Uber, Bolt, FreeNow, etc.).
